JERMAIN Defoe will equal a January transfer window record when he completes his move to Sunderland.

Defoe – who passed a medical with the Black Cats yesterday – will make a January switch for the fourth time in his career.

Only Wayne Bridge has made that number of moves to Premier League clubs in the winter transfer window, since the window was introduced in 2003, according to research by bwin.

Ironically, the final of those switches for Bridge was a loan move to Sunderland.

The Wearside club will be hoping Defoe makes an immediate impact to keep them in the Premier League, and the signs are good.

When the striker moved from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2004, he scored seven league goals in the second half of the season.

He was also a success when he made a winter switch from Spurs to Portsmouth in 2008, netting eight times, while he scored twice in the second half of the season after making the reverse move a year later.
