Cuellar out of Sunderland’s Hammers trip

Have your say

Carlos Cuellar is out of this weekend’s trip to West Ham United because of the hamstring strain which forced him out of Sunderland’s game against Liverpool last weekend, writes Chris Young.

The Spaniard failed to reappear for the second-half of the 1-1 draw and Martin O’Neill confirmed today that the strain has sidelined him for the trip to London tomorrow.

“He complained about the hamstring tightening on him and that’s why we didn’t risk him in the second half,” said O’Neill.

“But the medics have confirmed it is a problem that will keep him out of this weekend.”

There was good news on the Danny Rose front though.

The on-loan Spurs left-back was substituted in the Liverpool game with tiredness and a slight niggle in the groin.

But the strain has cleared up and O’Neill knows that Rose will be better, fitness-wise, for his run out against the Reds.

The big question mark is over the fitness of England international Adam Johnson who missed out on last week’s game with a thigh strain.

O’Neill said: “Adam was touch and go for last week and I’m afraid he’ll be touch and go for this week.

“The up-side is that he’s had a further week to recover but it is one of those where you leave it to the last minute and see how he is.”
