Chelsea were back to their best following the sacking of Jose Mourinho - with a hapless first half from Sunderland helping them ease to a 3-1 win.

2-0 up at half-time, it could and should have been far more.

Sunderland finally got going after Fabio Borini netted from close range to make it 3-1 53 minutes in.

But it couldn't spark a dramatic comeback, with Jermain Defoe missing some good chances.

Who scooped the man of the match gong? Richard Mennear gives his ratings.

Sunderland (3-5-2):

Costel Pantilimon: 5. Left exposed for both goals. Made a good save from Oscar 30 minutes in. Gave away penalty, just enough contact.

Billy Jones: 5. Lost all defensive shape in opening 15 minutes. Struggled to regain any momentum from there.

John O'Shea (C): 5. Poor from Sunderland defensively, O'Shea made several blocks but the back line were all over the place.

Younes Kaboul: 5. Similar to O'Shea and Jones. Poor but the defence was getting overran by the impressive Chelsea midfield.

Sebastian Coates: 3. Subbed after less than 23 minutes and went straight down the tunnel. Dismal. At fault for both goals. Had been ill in build-up to match.

Patrick Van Aanholt: 5. Not great on his return to Stamford Bridge. Sunderland looked shell-shocked first half. Van Aanholt blasted over couple of chances.

Yann M'Vila: 6. MOM. Sunderland's brightest player, tracked back to win ball. The only one to come out with any credit.

Jack Rodwell: 5 Outpassed in the centre of midfield, couldn't have an impact. Similar to Toivonen first half.

Ola Toivonen: 3. Totally anonymous for 45 minutes. Barely touched the ball. Sunderland missing Cattermole/Larsson badly. Subbed at HT.

Duncan Watmore: 5. Couldn't get into the game first half. Poor finish half an hour in from M'Vila's long ball. Improved second. Subbed.

Jermain Defoe: 5. A bystander in the opening 45 minutes. Improved second, saw one shot go narrowly wide. And squandered another great chance.

Adam Johnson (for Coates, 23): 6. Didn't impact the game when he came on first half but more involved second.

Fabio Borini (for Toivonen, 45): 6. Scored from close range after coming on as half-time sub. Shot narrowly wide moments later.

Danny Graham (for Watmore, 79): 6. Came on late, didn't impact proceedings.
