Ben Garner’s side have been searching for a new striker since Jonson Clarke-Harris left to join Peterborough United.

That player is former Gillingham striker Brandon Hanlan.

Hanlan had interest from Portsmouth earlier in the summer, but the two clubs were did not agree a fee.

The 23-year-old’s contract at Gillingham had expired, but he was continuing to train with the club and as he is under the age of 24, the Gills were due compensation.

Boss Steve Evans had wanted Hanlan to stay, but Rovers have swooped to secure the signing.

Hanlan played twice against the Black Cats in the league last season, part of a lively front pairing with Mikael Mandron that took four points from their clashes with Phil Parkinson’s side.

He scored seven goals last season, and nine in the season before that.

Garner said: “We are delighted to introduce Brandon as our new number 9. He is a powerful and skilful forward who can both create and score goals. Brandon also has the work ethic and energy we want at the front end of the team.

“Brandon has good experience of League One and we feel we can really help him develop further. It is an exciting signing and hopefully he can have a real impact with us."

Saturday’s game could also see Jack Baldwin make his league debut for Rovers.

The 27-year-old joined Garner’s side following his release from Sunderland at the end of last season.
