Co-established by former Liverpool and Bradford City full-back Stephen Darby – whose wife, Steph Houghton, previously played for Sunderland Ladies – the foundation aims to raise vital funds to help those living with Motor Neurone Disease.

Darby was diagnosed with the disease in 2018 and has since thrown himself into charitable work.

And the last initiative devised by the foundation is the ‘100k in May’ challenge – where participants are challenged to walk or run 100km during the month while fundraising.

A number of high-profile names in the male and female games have already pledged their support to the campaign, including Sunderland defender Bailey Wright and head of sports science Nick Allamby.

The duo will both be aiming to traverse 100k during the month, while a number of other players and staff from the Academy of Light – namely Max Power, George Dobson, Conor McLaughlin, Charlie Wyke and Lee Butler – have already donated to the cause.

The duo managed Darby during their time at Bradford City and have remained close with the defender.
