DERBY hero Fabio Borini hopes his stunning winner against Newcastle United will prove a platform for revival.

Borini’s late strike in today’s Wear-Tyne derby sealed a first victory of the campaign for Sunderland, who moved off the Premier League’s basement as a result.

The 2-1 win ended a run of six successive defeats for the Black Cats and on-loan Liverpool frontman Borini is eager for it to be the start of a resurgence for Gus Poyet’s side.

Borini said: “We gave it everything today.

“It was obviously a special game, but we need to show that every game is as special to us as this game.

“We won this game and hopefully we’ll get a few wins now.

“If we play like we played today with a little bit more calm on the ball, we can really improve our game.”

Victory continued Gus Poyet’s Midas touch against the Magpies after the new Sunderland head coach scored six goals against Newcastle as a player and knocked Alan Pardew’s side out of the FA Cup in the last two seasons as Brighton boss.

It was a perfect home debut for Poyet and Borini paid tribute to the Urguayan’s work on the training ground in his three weeks at the helm.

“Lots of the work we’ve done is because of him,” added Borini.

“He came in and gave us the enjoyment we needed and obviously the football.

“It’ll take a little bit of time to improve again, but that’s a great first step.”
