SUNDERLAND were cruelly denied a deserved victory in the Barclays U18 Premier League Northern Division at Bolton’s Eddie Davies Academy
The young Black Cats, recovering from last week’s defeat to Middlesbrough, stepped up the plate and took the game to the home side.
However, it was the Trotters who took the lead 15 minutes in. Sunderland pressed hard but were unable to find a way through.
Within seconds of the second half starting, Sunderland showed their mettle pushing forward and when Luke Molyneux broke into the box and was felled, Ethan Robson coolly slotted the resulting penalty home.
Sunderland’s surge was dramatically cut short when Andrew Nelson was red-carded for what can only be described as a “handbags at dawn” confrontation.
This didn’t seem to upset the young Wearsiders and they continued to push forward.
Sunderland were duly rewarded in the 87th minute when Ethan Robson cut inside at the edge of the box and let fly a tremendous shot which the home keeper was unable to stop hitting the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the Whites cancelled out Sunderland’s advantage in the last minute.
Sunderland coach Elliott Dickman said afterwards: “I was impressed the lads responded to last week’s defeat, especially going down to 10 men that early. I thought we were unlucky not to get the three points.”
