BLACKBURN Rovers are considering making a move for Sunderland defender Louis Laing.

But the Championship outfit will have to wait until the outcome of Laing’s trial with Manchester United’s development squad, before they can consider offering the 21-year-old a contract.

Laing has spent the last week training with United’s Under-21s after Sunderland made the decision last month to allow him to leave the Academy of Light when his Black Cats deal expires at the end of June.

It remains a long shot for Laing to pen a deal with the reigning Premier League champions, particularly as he turns 22 next March and by then would need to be registered as an over-age player in the U21 League or force his way into the first-team frame.

But there is plenty of interest elsewhere in Laing, who has seen his development hindered by a series of injuries.

Laing’s fortnight at Blackburn came to an end last Friday and after training with both the U21s and the first-team squad at Ewood Park, the Echo understands that Rovers were impressed with what they saw.

But with a series of suitors vying to claim Laing’s signature, Blackburn realise they will have to bide their time before offering a contract.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy have linked Sunderland with a move for Watford centre-half Gabriele Angella.

The 24-year-old has made 38 appearances for the Hornets this season after arriving from Serie A outfit Udinese last summer.

West Ham and Sunderland have both been mooted as being interested, although the reports appear to be agent-driven.
