Betting on Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon move suspended

STEPHANE Sessegnon’s future on Wearside has been brought into question after a bookmaker yesterday suspended any more bets on the striker joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Sunderland yesterday played down the suggestion that there is any significance in the development and it wouldn’t be the first time that bookies have suspended betting on something happening, only for that prediction not to come off.

But the fact that there has been a flood of bets on Sessegnon moving to White Hart Lane suggests that Spurs are keenly interested in Sunderland’s Player of the Season (pictured).

The situation seems somewhat bizarre, given Spurs are currently managerless in the wake of Harry Redknapp’s sacking.

But Redknapp spoke at the end of last season about how much of an admirer he was of the Benin international – a firm indication of the Londoners’ interest – and Spurs will have put their summer transfer plans into action long before the manager’s unexpected departure earlier this month.

Spurs were, for example, close to signing Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen before Redknapp’s dismissal and have insisted that the manager’s exit will in no way affect the transfer move.

They could also be poised to push a big-money offer Sunderland’s way, following up their original interest and confident the Wearsiders will accept it.

If they come in for him, though, Spurs could face massive competition from Premier League champions Manchester City and Arsenal.

And apart from all that, Martin O’Neill has no intention of letting the skilful striker leave if he can possibly help it.

The Sunderland manager went into the close season publicly stressing how much he wants to keep hold of a player he rates very, very highly and will be hugely disappointed if Sessegnon leaves.
