ASTON VILLA are sweating on the fitness of striker Christian Benteke, ahead of this weekend’s crunch clash with Sunderland.
Benteke missed Saturday’s FA Cup quarter final win over West Brom with a hip problem after scoring a dramatic late winner against the Baggies in the Premier League last week to move Villa to within one point and one place of Sunderland.
The Belgian international’s injury is not thought to be severe, but Villa remain uncertain whether he will feature at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
When asked about Benteke, boss Tim Sherwood said: “We’re not sure. He’s going to continue to get assessed.”
Villa remain without a host of injured defenders, including Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos, Nathan Baker, Aly Cissokho and Kieran Richardson, while ex-Sunderland loanee Alan Hutton is suspended.
