SUNDERLAND’s Jackie Ashurst, the keen-tackling Scot who was third in line for the sweeper role which Martin Harvey had to vacate through injury in the closing stages of last season makes his League debut at centre half in the team to meet Millwall at The Den tomorrow.

It is a tough starting point for the Coatbridge-born six footer who will not be 18 until next month, but he has been well groomed in back four tactics and on the form shown in the youth team and Reserves over the last year, it has been clearly only a question of time before he was asked to step up in the senior side.

He takes over from Ritchie Pitt in an otherwise unchanged starting line-up with Billy Hughes again named as substitute.

Team: Montgomery, Malone, Coleman, Horswill, Ashurst, Porterfield, McGiven, Kerr, Watson, Lathan, Tueart. Sub: Hughes.
