Sunderland are out of the FA Cup at the third round stage after a 3-1 defeat away at Arsenal.

Sam Allardyce made seven changes for the game at the Emirates Stadium, with the Premier League game against Swansea City to come on Wednesday night.

But who impressed? Richard Mennear gives his player ratings here:

Sunderland (4-3-3)

Jordan Pickford: 8. MOM. Really impressed on his full debut. Conceded three but could do little about the goals, made some excellent saves. Distribution superb. Good blocks second half.

DeAndre Yedlin: 5. Was kept busy with the pacy Theo Walcott bombing at him. Struggled to contain the Arsenal forward. Did well to clear off the line second half, almost gave away a penalty though.

John O'Shea (C): 6. Sunderland's best defender. Closed down the Arsenal strikeforce well, the home side wanting to walk the ball in. Taken off early to rest him for Wednesday.

Sebastian Coates: 5. A few shaky moments but overall did well and played some good balls out from the back. Struggled late on as Arsenal's quality shone through.

Patrick van Aanholt: 5. Allowed Campbell to get away from him for the equaliser. Loves bombing forward but still needs to work on the defensive side of his game.

Lee Cattermole: 6. One wayward shot in the first half ended up in Row Z at the huge Emirates Stadium. Steady aside from that. Subbed early in second half.

Jeremain Lens: 8. Impressed, scored a good goal after good persistence. Had a point to prove and did his best to prove it. Sunderland's brightest player first half.

Ola Toivonen: 5. Saw plenty of the ball early on but faded quickly. Struggled to get into the game.

Duncan Watmore: 6. Certainly put a shift in and had to track back a fair deal as Arsenal attacked. Didn't see much of a sight on goal.

Steven Fletcher: 5. Struggled up front leading the line by himself. Didn't get into the game much first half. Improved second, should have scored with one header off the bar.

Danny Graham: 5. Similar to Fletcher, struggled to impose himself. Was picked out everytime by Pickford with his huge goal kicks though. Likely to leave this month.

Yann M'Vila (for Cattermole, 57): 6. Added a touch more guile to Sunderland midfield.

Billy Jones (for O'Shea, 65): 6. Sunderland were exposed for the goals.

Charis Mavrias (for Fletcher, 76): 5. Looked eager to impress but didn't impact the game. First start in TWO years!
