Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was the outstanding man of the match, despite conceding twice in tonight’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal.
Defeat guarantees bottom spot in the Premier League for the Black Cats, who were indebted to Pickford for another magnificent performance in keeping the score down at the Emirates.
Here’s how Sunderland rated.
Jordan Pickford: Superb save from Giroud ten minutes in and it only got better with stops from Ramsey, Iwboi, Xhaka, Mustafi etc to keep Sunderland in it. Poor marking let him down for Sanchez goals. MOM...9
Javier Manquillo: Energetic performance down the right flank, had his work cut out. Got forward when he could....7
Billy Jones: Playing as one of the three central defenders, shaky start but grew into the role. Awful miss with his head from a Larsson free-kick....6
John O’Shea: Marshalled the new-look back three well first half. Made some important blocks. Marking was ropey second half...6
Lamine Kone: Did well at the back for Sunderland, covering well when Arsenal breached the defence....7
Bryan Oviedo: Some mis-placed passes but worked hard to support Ndong.....6
Sebastian Larsson: Sloppy in possession at times and set pieces didn’t threaten Arsenal. Too many corners went begging. One free-kick should have been rewarded by Jones...6
Lee Cattermole: Back in the side after injury, had his work cut out but stuck to his task. Vocal throughout. Added some much-needed bite. Excellent display...7
Didier Ndong: Comical moment early on when he totally missed the ball. Big improvement after that, saw a low shot saved by Cech. Back to his best. Ran himself into the ground....7
Fabio Borini: Improved performance first half from the Italian. Decision making not always the best though. Sanchez ran away from him for the goal. Faded second half....6
Jermain Defoe: Caught offside a couple of times. Saw a low effort go just wide of the post. Quiet night....6
Subs: Lynden Gooch (for Cattermole, 77): Could have played Defoe in but ball was poor...5
Adnan Januzaj (for Manquillo, 81): Came on with Sunderland 2-0 down, had little impact....5
Darron Gibson (for Ndong, 88): Game was over when he arrived....5
