Sheffield Wednesday could pip Norwich City to sign freed Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher.

Fletcher becomes a free agent tomorrow following the expiry of his Black Cats contract, and Norwich had moved to the front of the queue for the Scotland international.

But Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal, eager to go one better than last season’s trip to the Championship play-off final, is keen on the ex-Wolves, Burnley and Hibs frontman, who cost Sunderland £12million in 2012.

The Owls are reported to have offered Fletcher, 29, a lengthier contract than Norwich, which could be a deciding factor for the player who spent the second half of last season at French club Marseille.
