Here’s what was said in the broadcast section of the press conference:

RECAP: Alex Neil press conference

Key Events

  • Sunderland face Coventry City in their first Championship fixture of the season on Sunday.
  • Black Cats boss Alex Neil held his pre-match press conference earlier today.
  • Neil was asked about the transfer market and expectations for the upcoming campaign.

Leon Dajaku missed Sunderland’s last two pre-season friendlies against Accrington Stanley and Hartlepool with a thigh issue.

Neil rotated his side in pre-season to get everyone up to speed, and there didn’t appear to be any other major concerns after the Hartlepool game on Monday.

Full-back Niall Huggins is set to miss the start of the season after suffering two serious injuries during the last campaign.

The 21-year-old suffered a stress fracture of the back before suffering the same injury in both of his heels as he began a comeback.

We’ll start with the latest on the transfer front.

Sunderland are interested in Everton strikers Ellis Simms and Nathan Broadhead, who impressed at the Stadium of Light last season.

To find out more we caught up with Everton reporter Adam Jones to find out more.

Here’s what he said about Simms’ ability:

“The Championship seems like a natural fit for Simms right now. He’s already impressed in League One and in the SPL during his time in senior football.

“His attributes seem very well suited to the high-octane nature of a Championship season and, with Sunderland needing an influx of goals following their return to this level, it could be a great match.”
