Adam Johnson, Sebastian Coates and Patrick van Aanholt are all expected to link up with the rest of the Sunderland squad at some stage of their North American pre-season tour.
The trio have all been absent during the first three days of Sunderland’s stint here in California, with the Black Cats beginning their tour with a 1-0 defeat to Sacramento Republic in the early hours of this morning.
But they should join their team-mates on this side of the Atlantic before Sunderland return to Wearside at the end of next week.
Sunderland travel to Canada on Friday night ahead of their clash against MLS side Toronto and that is likely to correspond with Johnson, Coates and van Aanholt all flying out.
Johnson has remained in the North East due to his ongoing legal problems.
However, it is understood that it has NOT been a straightforward case of Johnson simply being refused a visa to travel to the USA.
New signing Coates has been given extra time off after his involvement in the Copa America for Uruguay during the summer.
And van Aanholt, who featured in Sunderland’s opening pre-season friendly against Darlington 1883 last week, has sustained an injury which has kept him on Wearside.
