Alex Neil’s side opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time when Jack Clarke was fouled in the penalty area and Ross Stewart converted the subsequent spot kick.

The hosts drew level just after the hour mark when Bailey Wright conceded a penalty and Sean McConville sent Anthony Patterson the wrong way, before substitute Kodede Adedoyin made it 2-1.

The Black Cats have one more friendly ahead of their Championship opener against Coventry next weekend, with the team set to travel to Hartlepool on Monday.

Here’s how the match played out:

74’ GOAL! Accrington (Adedoyin)

Another mix up at the back after an Accrington throw from the right.

The ball dropped to Adedoyin and the substitute converted from close range.

71’ Another penalty appeal

Sunderland have got sloppy in the last few minutes.

This time O’Nien, who has replaced Gooch at right-back, gave the ball away with a pass across the pitch, allowing Adedoyin to advance into the box.

Evans brought the player down and there were strong appeals for another penalty.

The referee waved play on.

68’ Three more changes for Accrington

66’ O’Nien on for Sunderland

First change for Sunderland as O’Nien replaces Gooch.

63’ Goal! Accrington (McConville)

McConville sends Patterson the wrong way, converting low to the keeper’s left.

Wright hesitated on the ball and lost possession with McConville and Fenlon applying pressure on the defender.

Wright then brought down the former in the box and the referee pointed straight to the spot.

That looked like a slick move from Sunderland, after Pritchard and Roberts combined before releasing Clarke through on goal.

The latter had just strayed offside.

58’ Two more changes for Accrington

Sunderland have kept up their momentum in this second half.

This time Pritchard’s free-kick was kept out by a fine save from Jensen.

From the following corner, Stewart headed the ball back to Wright whose shot was straight at the Accrington keeper.
