Lee Johnson’s side were in action for the first time since mid-December after a number of their scheduled fixtures over the festive period were postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 at the club’s training ground.

The Black Cats struggled to find their rhythm upon their return, however, and were limited to just four shots on target over the course of the 90 minutes.

The result leaves Johnson’s men 11th in the table, three points off a play-off spot and 12 points behind leaders Lincoln City, but with games in hand over many of the sides above them.

A point on the road means that the Wearsiders were able to maintain their unbeaten record away from home so far this term, but for many fans, it was difficult to see the silver lining on a dour afternoon that offered few noteworthy positives.
