And the Sunderland boss may be tempted to take a look at a number of the free agents who could be available in League Two come the summer – with a number of talented players potentially available.
Here, we take a look at some of the options that may appeal to Parkinson:
1. Eoin Doyle (Swindon Town)
The striker is set to be on the radar of a number of clubs this summer, having netted 23 times in 23 appearances for Swindon this season. Sunderland are in need of a goalscorer, and Doyle may fit the bill. Photo: Dan Mullan
2. Hope Akpan (Bradford City)
An experienced midfield general, Akpan is a former Everton youngster and has plenty of experience in League One. He could prove a reliable option if Parkinson is looking to add to his options. Photo: George Wood
3. James Jones (Crewe Alexandra)
While injuries have stunted his development, Jones is a former Scotland youth international and has reportedly been courted by Championship sides. At 24, time is still on his side too. Photo: Nathan Stirk
4. Keshi Anderson (Swindon Town)
Along with Doyle, Anderson has been a key man in Swindon's promotion push this term. The former Crystal Palace youngster has plenty of pace and power - which is exactly what Sunderland are looking for. Photo: Pete Norton
