Skipper Sarah eager to see Durham Women clinch top-four finish

The visit to Berkhamsted is the WIldcats’ penultimate game of the Women’s Super League 2 season, followed by the visit of Millwall a week later, and Wilson is keen to see her side pick up three points to ensure their record-breaking season ends on a high note.

But the captain, who has been an ever-present for Durham this year, is wary of the threats the Lady Hornets carry despite victory over them earlier this season.

“It’s the second last game of the season so we’re obviously looking to finish on a high,” said Wilson.

“We want to finish as high up the table as we possibly can, and that means that we’ve got to get three points in the next two games.”

A 3-0 win over Watford in July was arguably one of Durham’s finer performances this season, with plenty of chances created throughout.

But Wilson is well aware that the previous result will mean nothing this weekend. “In this league, you can’t call games going into them,” she added.

“We did beat them last time, 3-0 at home, but you can’t really read too much into that.

“We just need to make sure that we go, prepare and make sure we get switched on and focused on what the overall aim is.”

Defeat against Everton in their last game effectively ruled Durham out of the promotion race, but spirits remain high in the camp according to Wilson

“We’re not disheartened or anything – we know this season has been absolutely incredible,” the captain said.

“We’re pretty much on target to beat what we set out to do and we’ve had a great season both on and off the field.

“That’s what we’re looking to do – finish as strong as high up the table as we possibly can.”

“It’s been fantastic,” said Wilson on the spirit in the squad following that defeat.

With two games to go, six points is the aim for Durham as they look to end with a top-four finish.

And for Wilson, despite the talented opposition, there is an opportunity.

“They’re two great teams that we’re coming up against but there’s great potential to pick up three points,” she said.

“We just need to go in with the right level of confidence and attitude knowing what the overall aim is.”
