SUNDERLAND RCA were comfortable winners of last night’s STL Northern League First Division clash at struggling Ryton.
Ryton, with only one win all season, were just a goal behind at half-time, with a dreadful blunder enabling striker Richard Logan to score against his former club.
Logan doubled RCA’s advantage early in the second period following a good pass from Harrison Davies.
Neil Hixon’s side duly took total control. John Toft broke clear of his marker and hammered a third goal out of keeper Ian Richardson’s reach, before a superb individual effort by Davies made it 4-0.
Jarrow Roofing produced a shock 4-0 win over Bedlington Terriers. Lee McMahon, who hit a clinical opener, set up Peter Watling to double the lead.
David Duke played in Craig Nelson for a simple tap-in, and Nelson netted again from Michael Coglan’s pass.
Whitley Bay enhanced their promotion prospects, easily defeating South Shields 3-0, with David Pounder, Damon Robson’s 20-yarder and a cracking effort from Craig McFarlane doing the damage.
In Division Two, Birtley Town pipped neighbours Chester-le-Street 2-1, Chris Tait volleying the winner past Cestrian goalkeeper Kyle Barlow deep into stoppage time.
Birtley led through Andy McIntosh’s fourth-minute goal until Nicky Kane headed in a corner to level early in the second half.
Whickham maintained their promotion aspirations, but relied on Scott Robson’s 87th-minute strike, beating two defenders before driving an angled shot into the bottom corner, to beat lowly Brandon United 1-0.
