'Praying for his recovery' - messages of support for Denmark's Christian Eriksen after collapse on pitch at Euros

Inter Milan player Eriksen dropped to the ground at the Parken Stadium shortly before half-time on Saturday, June 12, leaving players from both teams in clear distress.

English referee Anthony Taylor called medics onto the pitch and Eriksen underwent prolonged treatment.

The 29-year-old collapsed face first as the ball hit his knee. A medic was seen performing compressions on Eriksen’s chest.

Teammates formed a shield around the former Tottenham man, while fans inside the stadium were clearly stunned by the incident, with some pictured in tears.

A tweet from UEFA shortly afterwards confirmed the Group B match had been suspended due to a medical emergency.

It said: “Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 7.45pm CET [6.45pm UK time].

“The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.”

Denmark later tweeted an update on his condition which read: “Christian Eriksen is awake and is (set) for further examinations at Rigshospitalet (hospital).”

It was then confirmed by the Danish Football Association that the game was to be played to a conclusion on Saturday, resuming at 10:30pm local time (7.30pm BST).

‘All of our thoughts are with you’

Dozens of current and former players have also posted messages of support for Eriksen, including his Inter Milan team-mate Achraf Hakimi.

“Eriksen Please,” tweeted the Moroccan international.

Inter’s own message of support said: “Forza Chris, all of our thoughts are with you!”

Others posting similar tweets for the Denmark midfielder include former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Manchester United’s former right-back Gary Neville as well as current England and Aston Villa forward Jack Grealish.

As UEFA confirmed that Eriksen had been stabilised, Gary Lineker tweeted: “Thank heavens. Some hope. Thoughts are with him and his family.”

Politicians and celebrities also shared messages of support for the footballer and his family.

David Lammy, the Labour MP for Tottenham and shadow justice secretary, tweeted: “Prayers and thoughts for Danish and Spurs Legend Christian Eriksen. We are all rooting for you brother.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan added: “Deeply upsetting scenes in Copenhagen.

“My thoughts right now are with Christian Eriksen, his family, and everyone in Denmark and around the world praying for his recovery.”
