Over-40s League: Moody blues for struggling Steels

Chris Moody bagged a clinical hat-trick as Penshaw Catholic Club kept Steels King Bros deep in trouble at the wrong end of the Premier Division.

Steels were soon chasing the game after a defensive error allowed Moody to nip in and put Penshaw ahead after 12 minutes.

Eight minutes later, though, Steels were awarded a free-kick which Joe Clark curled in from 25 yards to level.

Steels again fell behind when Moody claimed his second following further defensive misery, but, within a minute, they equalised when Clark’s free-kick was gleefully headed home by Brett Cummings.

The second half had only just started when Moody robbed the Steels sweeper and coolly beat the keeper to claim his hat-trick to net what proved to be the winner.

Despite a good effort from Steels, they rarely threatened the Penshaw defence and remain third-bottom, only goal difference keeping them out of the bottom two.

Tudhoe Black Horse leapfrogged Ryhope Foresters into fifth place after a 3-2 win away win, while Red House WMC impressively beat fourth-top Billingham Swan 2-1.

Tony Tatum starred for depleted Hebburn Town in a 3-0 defeat to Darlington Shuttle and Loom, who had Mark Weldon and James Brown (2) on target.

Grindon Broadway had to scrap hard to beat Easington CIU 2-1 in Division One.

Grindon were caught cold when Tommy Wilkinson gave the visitors a 20-second lead, but, within a minute, Grindon equalised with a David Taylor shot.

Grindon were the slightly better team in the first half and, with a minute to go until half-time, Paul Griffith fired them in front.

Grindon’s keeper had an excellent game to keep out impressive Easington in the second half. Grindon missed a sitter which would have put the game to bed.

Graeme Jobson starred for Grindon, Lee Stockport for Easington, with referee Ashley Cooper contributing to a well-contested game.

Pelton Crown almost produced the shock of the day when they were narrowly beaten 5-4 at home by leaders Washington Sandpiper.

Sandpiper missing a great chance in the first minute only for Pelton to go down the other end and take the lead when Ivan Moxon headed in Mickey McAdam’s cross.

Washington came into the game and went 3-1 up with goals from Nathan Hicks, Gary Allison and Steve Jones, but Pelton battled back to level with a screamer from McAdam and a second Moxon strike.

Sandpiper piled on the pressure in the second half and Gary Allison poached his second goal, though Moxon’s hat-trick pegged them back.

Debutant Karl Siberry, though, volleyed in a sensational Sandpiper winner from the edge of the box.

Alan Jardine played a blinder in goal for Crown, while Stephen Thompson also shone. Mark Robson starred for Washington.

Dubmire moved off the bottom thanks to a fine 2-0 win at sixth-top Hartlepool Gillen Arms.

Dubmire punished some sloppy play to take the lead just before the break, and a well-organised defence kept the hosts at bay on the restart. A clinical second goal sealed only Dubmire’s fifth win of the season, lifting them four places to 10th in a congested foot of the table.

Oddfellows Arms moved four points clear of Division Four’s bottom club, Wearmouth Old Boys, thanks to a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Trimdon Vets.

Wearmouth were outgunned 4-1 by visitors Heighington Bay Horse.

Ivy Legends maintained their fine form with a 2-1 defeat of Shildon Grey Horse to stay third, ahead of Durham County Strollers, who beat Hartlepool Greenside 8-1.

Colonel Prior were sunk by four second-half goals from Jason Fenwick for visitors Hartlepool Tech, though they did grab a couple of consolation strikes.

Billingham Vets went the nearest to scoring in a stalemate against Pelton Newfield when Stewart Johnson’s good cross was missed by two players Pelton’s keeper made several good saves.

The Philadelphia showed great character to come from behind to beat Rolls-Royce in Division Three.

Rolls took the lead when Andy Laidler was first to react in a goalmouth scramble to tap home from five yards.

It was a tight game, with end to end football, but Phili came out stronger and took their chances well, equalising before half-time and then bagging two second-half strikes to secure all three points. That kept them nine points off top spot, with two games in hand.

Leaders Blue House enjoyed a 3-1 victory at Washington JFC Biddick Inn.

Houghton Cricket Club moved three points clear of the bottom two following a 1-1 draw at Hedworthfield Red Hackle, while Willow Pond moved seventh with a 4-2 victory at second-bottom Woodhorn Lane. Boldon Colliery Tavern stayed bottom after a 3-2 loss to Richmond Town.

Second Division leaders Seaham Marlborough edged a 1-0 victory at lowly Cobblers Hall, but Thornley Celtic, with four games in hand, stayed three points behind by beating North Shields Pineapple 5-3.

Hylton CW climbed to third after a 2-0 success at Gateshead Rutherford, while Mill View SC impressively walloped hosts South Shields Catholic Club 5-0.
