Once Damien Stevens (2) and Kyle Downey scored before the interval, Martin Swales’ side faced a formidable challenge.

Stephen Callen deservedly reduced the deficit on 56 minutes, but the Wearsiders were unable to make further inroads, despite the Colliers having Ben Harmison sent off after 75 minutes.

In added time, Wayne Buchanan – who had been shown a yellow card in the clash with Harmison – also received his marching orders and Ashington ended 3-1 winners.

Seaham Red Star defeated Morpeth Town 5-3 in a thriller at Seaham Town Park.

Darren Reay (2) and Robbie Bird had Star three goals ahead, but the FA Vase finalists rallied and reduced the deficit to a single goal, courtesy of Keith Graydon and Luke Carr (pen).

Following the visitors’ double, Mark Collingwood’s team stepped up a gear and went 5-2 up as man-of-the-match Bird completed a hat-trick.

There was still time for Michael Hill to claim a third goal for Morpeth, but Seaham were never troubled late on.

The rest of the scheduled programme was postponed.
