Northern League: Brave Easington miss out in shoot-out drama against Roofing

Easington Colliery pushed Jarrow Roofing to penalties in last night's Cameron Brewery Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup tie, going down 5-4 after a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Roofing started the game brightly, but they found it hard to deal with Easington’s high-pressure game. The hosts closed down every ball and looked content to hit the visitors on the counter-attack.

Nathan Renton almost benefited from one of these counters as he was played through by Jack Pounder before cutting into the box and dribbling past Dan Kirkup, but he could only fire a low shot straight at Andy Jennison.

Roofing went ahead in the 32nd minute, though, when Calvin Smith unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard shot past goalkeeper Ethan Anderson.

On 44 minutes, they doubled their lead when Alex White sent in a great cross and Paul Chow played a neat one-two with Michael Mackay before finishing well.

Underdogs Colliery, came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and deservedly pulled a goal back in the 54th minute, when Nathan Renton chased a long through ball and fired in off the post.

They deservedly equalised when Renton headed home following a corner two minutes later.

Both sides missed one of their first two penalties in the shoot-out, but they each scored the next three as they reached sudden death.

Roofing went 5-4 up then Joe Kerridge, so often the hero for Easington this season, blazed over to see the visitors through.
