STL NORTHERN League Second Division champions Team Northumbria upset the form book when they defeated First Division title-winners Spennymoor Town in the semi-final of the Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup, writes Malcolm Pratt.

Jason Ainsley’s side went ahead through Stephen Foster, but within six minutes Northumbria were level courtesy of Dean Critchlow.

Former Washington striker Peter Watling fired Northumbria in front and they held the lead for 50 minutes until Sonny Andrews levelled.

The tie went into extra time, with Watling on target. However, when Andrews again struck, the outcome was decided on penalties and Northumbria won 4-2.

They will meet West Auckland Town at home in the final on a date to be arranged.

Because their opponents are in the FA Carlsberg Vase Final at Wembley next Sunday, a date has not yet been announced.
