Northern League: Seaham Red Star in a big fight for survival now '“ starting against Newton Aycliffe tonight

Seaham Red Star have a real relegation fight on their hands after losing 2-1 at home to third-top West Auckland Town in Division One on Saturday.

Craig Lynch’s men are now just three points above reviving Jarrow Roofing, in third-bottom spot, albeit they have a game in hand.

Two goals either side of half-time secured the win for West. Mark Doninger deflected a shot past goalkeeper Jordan Harkess to make the breakthrough, and Daniel Parker headed powerfully home for 2-0.

Thomas Scott pulled one back just before the end for Red Star, but West held firm to see out the win, handing Seaham a sixth defeat in seven league games.

They must rouse themselves for tonight’s vital trip to seventh-bottom Newton Aycliffe, ahead of a tough trip to Marske United on Thursday.

West Auckland secretary,Jim Palfreyman, whose side visit Newcastle Benfield this evening, said: “We played very well and fully deserved the victory and the three points. We dominated the game throughout and have consolidated third position in the league.”

Ryhope CW could have gone 11th with a third win in five days, but they lost 2-1 away to Guisborough Town, with all the goals coming in the last 10 minutes.

The Priorymen took the lead on 82 minutes through Lee Bythway. Two minutes later, they doubled their tally following Mason McNeill’s effort.

Mickey Rae did get Gary Pearson’s men on the scoresheet with a penalty in the 93rd minute, but it was too little too late for the Wearsiders.

Ryhope have a daunting challenge tonight, at home to second-top Marske United. They entertain bottom club Billingham Synthonia on Wednesday.

Relegated Washington succumbed 3-0 to visitors Stockton Town.

Fred Woodhouse broke the deadlock just before half-time, then Chris Stockton hit home a vicious shot in the 65th minute and Sonni Coleman’s cheeky effort late on secured three comfortable points for the Wembley-bound FA Vase finalists.

Consett were well beaten by leaders Morpeth Town, going down 4-1 at Craik Park as the Highwaymen kept their title challenge alive.

Michael Sweet gave the visitors a fifth-minute lead, but ex-Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott equalised 10 minutes later.

Jordan Fry headed in just after half-time, putting Morpeth in front, then David Carson and a Joe Walton penalty sealed the hosts’ win.

Consett tonight head to Meadow Park to tackle on-form Sunderland RCA, who are fresh from a blank weekend.

Morpeth are now 12 points clear, with Marske having seven games in hand.

Bishop Auckland eased their relegation fears, and jumped ahead of Seaham Red Star, by thumping Whitley Bay 4-0, their third win in the last four games.

Chris Winn got them off to a terrific start, scoring in the very first minute, and further goals from Thomas McAloon (2) and Darren Richardson earned the Two Blues three vital points.

Jarrow Roofing kept up their survival push with a 2-2 draw at home to Newton Aycliffe.

Roofing scored in the first and last minutes, with Dennis Knight giving them the perfect start.

Aycliffe responded to go 2-1 ahead through Craig Hutchinson and Thibault Charmey, but Roofing showed character to level in the last minute, when John Campbell kept his head to score from the penalty spot.

Relegated Billingham Synthonia lost 2-0 at Penrith, who secured three crucial points in the fight to avoid the drop.

After a goalless first half, the Cumbrians went ahead with Jonny Murray’s strike from close range..

Victory was sealed 10 minutes from time, when Andrew Murray-Jones headed past goalkeeper Tom Dawson.

Dunston UTS rallied to draw 1-1 at home to Team Northumbria.

Title-chasing Marske United were held to a 1-1 draw at North Shields.

Paul Robinson gave the home side the lead just before half-time, scored direct from a free-kick.

But the Seasiders levelled on 50 minutes, with a close-range finish from Glen Butterworth, after a good team move.
