Bruce revealed after yesterday’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers that the £40million striker is carrying a groin injury.

Miguel Almiron’s early strike at Molineux – where Dwight Gayle and Paul Dummett were forced off with injuries – was cancelled out by Leander Dendoncker, and Newcastle remain 13th in the Premier League ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay against Rochdale.

“We certainly scored a great goal, a really top-class goal,” said head coach Bruce. “But unfortunately after that, we didn’t really carry the threat that we had at the start of the game. We lost Dwight, and Jo is basically lame, but he carried on. He should have come off, but we couldn’t really make the substitution because of what had happened the week before – and the threat of going down to 10 men.”
