Daryl Janmaat says Newcastle United are a better footballing side than Sunderland – and it’s up to the Magpies to prove it in the next derby.
Janmaat was in the team beaten 3-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, and the defender said: “It’s disappointing, but I believe we are much better than them.
“We play them again (on March 19), and then we have to show them. Second-half, we played with 10 men, so it’s always difficult.
“But, in the first half, you could see who wanted to play, who was the better team, and I think in every (area) of the game we were better.
“It is disappointing because you lost the derby and that is not nice, especially for the supporters. We wanted to win.”
The result leaves Newcastle 19th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s home game against Stoke City.
“We all want better than to be in the relegation zone,” said Janmaat. “We haven’t had a good start – that’s simple.
“We have to improve, but I think in the last two or three games we have shown some promising things.
“I think we can do it, but every time there’s something new that costs us the game.”
Asked if the Tynesiders were now in a relegation battle, Janmaat said: “It’s a worry. That’s normal, because we are now in the relegation positions, so we have to do better and win games soon.”
