Schalke defender Joel Matip is not interested in a move to Newcastle United, according to reports in Germany.
The centre-half has been linked with a switch to Tyneside this summer in a £7million move.
But reports today rubbished the suggestion, with Schalke manager Horst Heldt claiming the 23-year-old Cameroon internatoonal wants to stay with the Bundisliga club.
Matip has just one year left on his contract, and German newspaper DerWesten claim that even if he decided to leave Schalke, he would have his sights set higher than a move to Newcastle, who struggled to avoid releation last season.
“Joel wants to stay at Schalke,” said Heldt.
“So far we have not yet negotiated, but only an exploratory talk.”
Matip came up against Newcastle in a pre-season game last summer.
