REPORTS linking former Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster with the head coach role at Newcastle United have been played down.

Odds on the German taking over at St James’s Park were cut significantly yesterday after a flurry of bets, and he is now the second-favourite for the job at a best-priced 5/2.

Radio station talkSPORT this morning claimed talks between Schuster and Newcastle would continue today, with discussions already having taken place on which backroom staff he would bring with him.

However, talk of Schuster succeeding Alan Pardew has since been played down.
