Sunderland's League One rivals set remarkable price tag for striker – and Newcastle United could be about to benefit

The likes of Bournemouth and Burnley are rumoured to be interested in the 23-year-old, who left United in a £350,000 deal back in 2018.

And, according to the Sun, Peterborough have put a £13million price tag on Toney’s head, as they look to cash in on the goal-laden former Northampton Town man.

As part of the deal that saw Toney head south, a significant sell-on clause was inserted and should the frontman move in January, it would prove a welcome boost to the Magpies’ winter window kitty.

Toney has scored 35 goals in 75 appearances for the London Road club, who sit third in the League One table.

Championship teams Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Bristol City and Derby have also shown an interest in Toney, who Posh reportedly rate as the best striker outside the top division.

Toney has scored 12 times this season.

Chairman Darragh MacAntony said: "Toney will break the transfer record for a League One player when he goes. If he goes that. He'll certainly smash the Posh record.

"We don't want to lose anyone in January, but you can't guarantee anything in football.

"If we do lose anyone, they will be replaced."

Toney was a Graham Carr find back in the summer of 2015, spending three years on Tyneside.

In that time he made four appearances for the United first-team.
