JONAS Gutierrez has told Newcastle United’s players to relax and enjoy the derby.
The Argentine, who is one of the more senior figures in the Magpies’ camp, says that Sunderland will be desperate to end their poor form in this fixture when the two sides clash on Sunday.
The Black Cats have only won once in the last 14 attempts, and will be determined to put that right in the high noon showdown at the Sports Direct Arena.
But rather than being wound up by the game, Gutierrez (pictured) wants his team-mates to revel in the occasion.
He said: “It is something fantastic and something we want to enjoy. But we want to stand out in the game.
“I know they (Sunderland) are coming here with a point to prove, and it will be difficult.
“We just want to get back to what we have been doing.”
Gutierrez goes into the game on the back of his superb strike against Wolves on Saturday, when he blasted home from 25 yards to put Newcastle 2-0 in front.
Wolves, however, fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw, leaving Gutierrez frustrated, but determined to add to his three-goal tally for the season.
He added: “It’s always good to score, but I wasn’t happy after Wolves because we didn’t win the game.
“I’d like to score again in the next game, but I’d take the win every time.
“I don’t set targets in terms of goals, but I do try to improve each game. In my position if I scored five or six a season it would be good. But I don’t think too much about it.
“I try to better each game, each season. If I improve all year round that’s great.”
