SUNDERLAND Under-21s took the derby spoils for the second time in three days tonight after triumphing over Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light.

A first win in 2014 for Kevin Ball’s side provided the perfect follow-up success to the first-team’s 3-0 weekend triumph on Tyneside.

After an opening 45 minutes when both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, Jordan Laidler gave Sunderland a second half lead when he converted from the penalty spot.

Sunderland had several opportunities to add to their advantage, with Laidler, Ross Holland and Martin Smith all going close.

But in stoppage time, Smith finally did grab a second with a cute toe-poke beyond Newcastle keeper Jak Alnwick from fellow substitute Lynden Gooch’s through-ball.
