SIEM de Jong says he still has everything to prove at Newcastle United as he nears his long-awaited comeback.

The forward, signed from Ajax last summer, played 45 minutes for the club’s Under-21s last night.

And de Jong is being assessed ahead of Sunday’s Premier League home game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old – who had surgery after suffering a collapsed lung in February – is hopeful of some part before the end of the campaign.

And de Jong, having missed the first half of the campaign with a torn thigh muscle, is focused on showing the club’s fans, and his team-mates, what he can do next season.

“I haven’t repaid the fans a lot this season, so I hope to be playing a couple of games, maybe, at the end of the season,” said de Jong.

“But I have to focus on next season and be really fit then, and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do, and show myself and show my team-mates what I can do.”

If de Jong is not deemed fit enough to be involved against Tottenham, he could instead make his comeback against Swansea City at St James’s Park on April 25.
