Benitez has been the subject of protests from Everton fans, some of which have displayed banners outside of Goodison Park and near his Merseyside home.

Whether or not that is the reason for the delay is unknown but the challenge at Fenerbahce is one Benitez is apparently intrigued by.

They’ve won the Turkish top-flight title a record 28 times but none since the 2013/14 campaign.

The 29-year-old played nine games on loan at the Riverside Stadium during his Magpies days in 2013, scoring on his debut at home to Cardiff City.

Since leaving his boyhood club, Ameobi has enjoyed permanent spells at Bolton Wanderers and Forest, where he had spent the previous two seasons.

Ameobi has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with an option of a further year.

Neil Warnock was delighted to get Ameobi on board. He said: “As soon as I became aware Sammy was available I let him know I wanted him, and we had a few good conversations.

"I thought it was important he could see what he could do for us, and what I could do for him.

"I've always thought he's a danger, and I'll be looking to use that danger and have a system where I can get him in positive forward positions."
