NEWCASTLE United new boy Ayoze Perez is slight of frame, but he has been backed to have a big impact in the Premier League.

The 20-year-old forward has been signed as one for the future.

But manager Alan Pardew – whose side struggled for goals in the latter months of last season – won’t be afraid to turn to him in the coming Premier League campaign.

Perez, signed from Spanish Segunda Division club Tenerife, will do extra strength and conditioning work to prepare him for the pace and power of English football.

And Pardew has high hopes the prolific marksman – who cost a reported £1.8million – will have a “breakthrough season” at St James’s Park.

“He’s slight, and has a bit of work to do in terms of his body and getting up to speed in the Premier League,” Pardew said.

“But he’s a fantastic talent. He’s scored a lot of goals, and we have high hopes for him.

“We hope he has a breakthrough season for us.”

Perez was courted by a number of clubs – Real Madrid, Benfica and Arsenal were all linked with him – and he said: “There have been many clubs interested in me, but this one was the most serious one, and the one that has treated me the best and valued me the most.”

Perez will meet his new team-mates early next month when the players – bar those who travelled to the World Cup – report back for the start of pre-season training.

Pardew is looking to sign two senior strikers this summer after the departures of Shola Ameobi and loanee Loic Remy.
