Patrick Vieira is no longer in the frame to be Newcastle United’s new head coach.

The Magpies are believed to have cooled their interest in the Frenchman and look set to appoint Steve McClaren as Alan Pardew’s full-time replacement.

The Gazette understands that talks with Vieira never materialised, with the Manchester City Under-21s boss attracting interest from elsewhere, including Turkish side Fenerbahce.

That leaves the road clear for McClaren, who was sacked as Derby County boss last week.

McClaren has already turned down the job twice, first in January after Pardew’s departure to Crystal Palace.

John Carver was put in charge until the end of the season, and Newcastle are understood to be holding talks with the Geordie today over his role.
