The 20-year-old’s display during the Seagulls’ 3-0 victory at St James’s Park last September contributed to his electric start to the campaign.

However, his season was disappointingly cut short after 11 matches due to a hamstring injury, although he was rewarded for his promise with a new long-term contract at the Amex.

But all that hasn’t put off other clubs, and when Tottenham’s interest was reported by Sky Sports, Barton responded on Twitter: “We should get him @NUFC”.

Toon ‘lead’ Carter-Vickers race

SBI Soccer journalist Larry Henry claims Newcastle are leading the race to sign £10m-rated Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham.

The US defender spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, and has been occasionally linked with United this summer,

Henry tweeted: “Another update on Cameron Carter-Vickers too from earlier, Newcastle look to be in the lead for him, per my source.

"Bournemouth have quieted their interest of late. Steve Bruce’s side would have to acquire for a decent fee.”

Ex-youngster won’t be joining Coventry

Former Newcastle youngster Alex Gilliead won’t be joining Championship side Coventry City, according to Coventry Live.

Gilliead, whose senior experience on Tyneside was made up of loans at Carlisle United, Luton Town and Bradford City, is attracting interest from clubs higher up the pyramid after turning down a new contract at Scunthorpe in League Two.

Mark Robins’ Sky Blues were linked with the 25-year-old’s signature but their interest has since been played down.

The winger was a fans’ favourite during his two years at Glanford Park – making 89 appearances in total.
