Paul Dummett could be set for a double boost going into the new season – by landing the No.3 shirt and a new contract at Newcastle United.

Dummett will report for pre-season this week along with the rest of his team-mates as the players return to training after the summer break.

Dummett is now in line to take Santon’s vacant No.3 shirt, having previously worn No.36.

They have a new manager and coaching team to impress after Steve McClaren’s appointment and the dismissals of John Carver and Steve Stone.

And Dummett looks set to be an integral part of the Magpies’ squad after establishing himself in the first team last season.

The Wales defender signed a long-term contract with his boyhood club in November 2013, but was one of the lower earners after coming through the ranks.

However, his impressive performances both at left-back and centre-half saw him emerge a key part of the Newcastle squad, so much so that Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Davide Santon were allowed to leave last season to Roma and Inter Milan respectively.

Dummett is now in line to take Santon’s vacant No.3 shirt, having previously worn No.36.

And the Magpies look set to open talks with him over fresh terms to his contract which would put him on parity with the rest of the first-team squad at St James’s Park.

McClaren will begin assessing his players when they return to their Benton training ground on Wednesday, but has already held talks about players with the coaching staff who remain from last season, including Under-21s chief Peter Beardsley and Dave Watson, who worked alongside Carver and Stone in the second half of the campaign.

Dummett’s versatility makes him a valuable member of the squad and he will compete with Massadio Haidara for the left-back spot, as well as provide cover in the middle.

Newcastle are looking to strengthen the centre of their defence this summer by buying a dominant stopper to add to the arrival of Jamal Lascelles, who spent last season back on loan at Nottingham Forest after signing from the Championship club.

Other vacant shirts will be Ryan Taylor’s No.4, Jonas Gutierrez’s No.18 and Yanga-Mbiwa’s No.13.
