NEWCASTLE United are weighing up an £8m swoop for Leeds United hotshot Ross McCormack.

The Magpies are desperate to add to their strikeforce this summer, and have targeted McCormack as potential option.

The 27-year-old finished last season as the Championship’s leading scorer with 29 goals after the best campaign of his career.

But he is keen to try his hand in the Premier League, and is understood to have told Leeds that he wants to leave after being unhappy with the Yorkshire club’s treatment of former manager Brian McDermott, who was sacked last month.

West Ham United, Celtic and Leicester have been linked with the Scotland international, who is under contract until 2017.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew wants to keep a British feel to his squad’s recruitment this summer, and has been linked with moves for English internationals Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Micah Richards.

But it is in attack that United’s need is most pressing, with Loic Remy, Luuk de Jong and Shola Ameobi not returning to the club next season, while the one remaining senior striker, Papiss Cisse, is recovering from a broken kneecap and won’t be fit for the August kick-off.

The Magpies are set to tie up a deal for Tenerife forward Ayoze Perez, but the 20-year-old is earmarked as a player for the future and not someone expected to make an immediate impression on the Premier League.

Newcastle have been linked with a host of strikers on the continent, but are also monitoring the Championship, with the likes of McCormack and Watford’s Troy Deeney among the players they’ve looked at.

McCormack - along with the rest of the Leeds squad - came back from his holidays on Monday to meet Leeds owner Massimo Cellino in a series of one-on-one meetings.

Cellino has previously vowed not to sell any of his best players as he looks to guide the fallen giants back into the Premier League.

McCormack was made captain of Leeds under McDermott, having joined the club from Cardiff City in 2010.

He has scored 53 goals for the Whites, and has found the net twice for Scotland. He was an unused substitute for their friendly against Nigeria last week.
