Newcastle United plot summer raid for Tottenham Hotspur ace

Newcastle United fans will have recognised plenty of familiar faces at Wembley on Friday night.

From coaches Graeme Jones and John Carver to Scottish winger Ryan Fraser, there were plenty of Toon-related figures on display, even if the latter failed to make it onto the pitch.

The 27-year-old joined the Magpies on a free transfer last summer but only made 18 Premier League appearances in 2020/21 as he struggled to find his best form.

But despite his recent struggles at St. James’ Park, former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has argued that his experience at Euro 2020 can be the catalyst needed for the wide man to reignite his ailing career in the north east.

“Fraser has a problem,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“Newcastle are much better when their best attacking players are available. Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin mainly.

“When Newcastle improved at the end of the season, Fraser was nowhere to been seen.

“He wasn’t part of the resurgence and the fans have barely seen him this year.

“I think he can benefit from Scotland’s training camp. To get stronger and to get that confidence back.

“He needs that belief back in his game. That’s huge and will do him the world of good.

“Whether he’s playing or not, he will be training at a very high level and that can only be beneficial for players who have struggled with injures the season before.”

Next up for Fraser and Scotland is a vital clash against Croatia on Tuesday evening.
