Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback will be sidelined for “up to six weeks” by the knee injury he suffered in the Wear-Tyne derby.
There had been fears that he was facing months on the sidelines.
However, the club has revealed that the injury is “not as bad as first feared” after the 26-year-old underwent a second scan today.
A statement read: “Jack Colback will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a knee injury, following further scans and assessment on Thursday.
“The injury is not as bad as first feared.”
Colback will miss at least six games as he undergoes rehabilitation.
He suffered the injury in a challenge from former Sunderland team-mate Lee Cattermole during last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.
