Florian Thauvin has revealed he could have been playing in the Premier League before now - with Arsenal.
The 22-year-old French forward joined Newcastle this week in a £13m deal.
But he has revealed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was keeping tabs on his progress a few seasons back.
Thauvin said: “Two or three seasons ago, Arsene Wenger perhaps made an approach with Arsenal.
“But apart from Arsenal, Newcastle are the only other club who have made an approach for me in the past.”
Now he is a Newcastle player, he is looking forward to living up to his price tag.
The forward is expected to make his Magpies debut in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off at Old Trafford tomorrow.
Thauvin admitted it was a “big decision” to move to the North East from his native France.
He added: “It’s always a big decision, especially when you have to leave your country and leave a club that you’ve been with for over two seasons.
“It’s hard when you’ve got your ways and a certain way of living.
“It’s a big challenge, which I’m looking forward to living up to.”
