David Wilkinson, 25, of Peterlee, whose wife Lauren is a daughter of Darren’s partner Karen Rodgers, said: “It’s just a case of wait and see.”

Darren suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and ribs, crushed pelvis, punctured lungs and lost five toes and skin from his back after he is thought to have collapsed while boarding a train at Bexleyheath Station, London, around 7.30am on Sunday.

He was on his way to watch his beloved Newcastle United play against Tottenham Hotspur.

A fundraising drive has been set up to help his family with accommodation and travel costs at the Darren White NUFC Facebook page and at www.gofundme.com/ghvomo
