Newcastle United are finally on the brink of a transfer breakthrough.

The Magpies have bid £11.5million for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

No deal has yet been reached, but Newcastle and PSV are close to an agreement for his transfer to St James’s Park.

Wijnaldum is understood to be keen on a move to Tyneside, where he would link up with Dutch countrymen Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Siem de Jong and Vurnon Anita.

The 24-year-old trained with his PSV team-mates yesterday, but Wijnaldum is not expected to travel to Switzerland today for the next stage of the club’s pre-season campaign.

Instead, the Holland international – who captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season – is likely to travel to Newcastle if negotiations between the two clubs can reach a successful conclusion.

Everton are also understood to be interested in Wijnaldum, but the Magpies’ talks with PSV are at an advanced stage.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren knows Wijnaldum well from his two spells at Twente, and he is hopeful that the deal will be concluded in the next 24 hours.

The Tynesiders kick off their pre-season campaign with a friendly at Gateshead tomorrow, before Newcastle flying out for a three-game tour of the USA.

Meanwhile, Dutch teenager Dani Koks, a product of Ajax’s academy, played for Newcastle’s Under-18s as a trialist in a 3-2 defeat to an under-23 Corby Town side in a behind-closed-doors game at Little Benton.

As well as 17-year-old midfielder Koks, Newcastle also featured locally-born forward Callum Douglas, who lives in Spain and plays for Elche. Douglas, 16, has also been on trial.
