Krul doubt worries Newcastle United

GOALKEEPER Tim Krul is a doubt for Newcastle United’s visit to Southampton on Saturday, writes MILES STARFORTH.

Deputy Rob Elliot has been put on standby, with Krul having picked up an injury in Tuesday’s 3-0 home defeat to Everton, having needed treatment after a second-half collision with visiting forward Romelu Lukaku.

Jak Alnwick, Newcastle’s third-choice goalkeeper, was pulled out of last night’s Under-21 game against Manchester United as he could be needed on the bench against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Newcastle will again be without striker Loic Remy and right-back Mathieu Debuchy, though there was better news for boss Alan Pardew on Davide Santon, who has returned to training after recovering from a bout of tonsilitis.

The Italian defender – who has also had a knee problem – has not featured for six weeks.

“Davide has had two or three days training,” said assistant manager John Carver. “He’s trained with the Under-21s.

“He’ll join in with us on Thursday, and we’ll see what he’s like.”
