JOE Kinnear has quit his post as Newcastle United’s director of football.
The club tonight issued a statement confirming the 67-year-old’s departure.
Kinnear - who returned to St James’s Park last summer to oversee the club’s recruitment - failed to deliver a permanent signing in his seven months in the position.
A club statement read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Joe Kinnear has this evening resigned from his position as director of football with immediate effect.
“The club will be making no further comment.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur defender had come under renewed fire from supporters after midfielder Yohan Cabaye, sold to Paris Saint-Germain last month, was not replaced.
And the mood on Tyneside was dark after Saturday’s 3-0 drubbing by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.
Kinnear had previously had a short-lived spell as manager after the exit of Kevin Keegan in 2008.
