GUS POYET says Sunderland have gift-wrapped the perfect Christmas present after securing a record-breaking fourth successive victory over Newcastle United.
Adam Johnson’s last-minute winner settled the Tyne-Wear derby today, as Sunderland recorded four wins on the spin against the Magpies for the first time in history.
It was only a third Premier League win of the campaign for Sunderland, but triumphant Black Cats head coach Poyet revelled in the festive victory, just four days before Christmas.
Poyet said: “I don’t think there’s a better way to celebrate Christmas than beating Newcastle.
“I need to be careful, because it’s firstly respect to everybody at Newcastle.
“I think it’s very difficult to celebrate these kind of games in the last minute, a winning goal, away from home.
“I hope that everybody will understand the feelings of all of us.
“It’s great, it’s incredible, we were on the good side and you’re going to remember it all your life.
“It’s a special moment for us, a special moment for the club.
“Records are there for somebody to break and we were able to continue this winning run against Newcastle, which is great for us, without forgetting that the three points are the main ones.
“It makes it a very special Christmas for us.”
