YOAN Gouffran has been likened to former Newcastle United forward Peter Lovenkrands.

Magpie Gouffran joined in January from French club Bordeaux, and the 27-year-old went on to score the goal which secured Newcastle’s Premier League status at Loftus Road in May.

Versatile Gouffran – who can play up front or out wide – has played in all four of Newcastle’s league and cup games this term.

Manager Alan Pardew worked with Lovenkrands during the latter part of his three and a half year career at St James’s Park.

And Pardew has likened Gouffran to the former Denmark international, now at Championship club Birmingham City.

“I think he’s like Peter Lovenkrands in that he’ll give you absolutely everything,” said Pardew.

“He’ll run all day and night for the team. His attitude is fantastic.

“I think our supporters appreciate those type of players. So it’ll be interesting to see he does this year.”

Gouffran’s signing was brought forward from this summer given the club’s Premier League predicament near the foot of the table.

And the former France Under-21 international had to quickly adjust to the demands of English football.

Gouffran scored three goals, and he is set for a significant role this season. “Gouffran, we felt, really pushed on when he got in the team last season,” added Pardew, who had hoped the club would sign another striker in the summer’s transfer window.

“It will be interesting to see how he does this season.

“He is a really terrific lad, a wholehearted player, and someone our fans do already appreciate.”
